The Real Cost of Hosting Your Own AI Assistant in 2026

Most people start the self-hosting math with the VPS price. A $6/month DigitalOcean droplet sounds pretty reasonable for running your own AI assistant. Then reality kicks in.

What the $6/month number leaves out

Your time. Initial setup for a Node.js app with Nginx, SSL, PM2, and a database takes most people 2 to 4 hours the first time. That is not counting troubleshooting.
