The Real Cost of Hosting Your Own AI Assistant in 2026

March 10, 20265 min read

Most people start the self-hosting math with the VPS price. A $6/month DigitalOcean droplet sounds pretty reasonable for running your own AI assistant. Then reality kicks in.

What the $6/month number leaves out

Your time. Initial setup for a Node.js app with Nginx, SSL, PM2, and a database takes most people 2 to 4 hours the first time. That is not counting troubleshooting. If you value your time at even $20/hour, you have already spent more than a month of VPS costs before the assistant sends a single message.

SSL certificates. Let's Encrypt is free, but it needs renewal every 90 days. If you forget and your cert expires, your bot goes silent. Most people find this out the hard way.

Updates. The underlying software your assistant runs on ships updates regularly. Security patches, bug fixes, new features. Every update is a manual process: SSH in, pull the latest version, restart the process, verify it started correctly, check the logs.

Monitoring. When your assistant goes down at 3am on a Saturday, nobody is going to tell you. You will find out when a friend messages you asking why your bot stopped responding. Setting up proper uptime monitoring and alerting is another afternoon project.

The database. If your assistant keeps any memory or conversation history, you need a database. That is more setup, more maintenance, and more things that can break.

The actual number

When you add it up honestly: 4 hours setup plus 1 hour per month for maintenance and updates, at $20/hour, the real monthly cost of a $6 VPS is closer to $26 in the first month, then $26/month ongoing. And that assumes nothing goes wrong.

When something does go wrong (and it will), debugging a crashed Node process on a remote server is not a fun afternoon.

The case for managed hosting

EasyClaw charges $20/month. For that you get: the server, SSL, uptime monitoring, automatic updates, and someone who actually cares if the service stays up. No SSH. No Nginx config. No cert renewals.

For most people, especially people who just want an AI assistant and not a sysadmin hobby, that is a better deal than it looks on paper.
